Colorado Press Association Foundation High School Student Scholarships 2009

Introduction: The internships are an educational opportunity for students interested in a newspaper career. Since the first year of the Foundation’s program in 1996, 98 high school students have interned at Colorado newspapers.A CPA Foundation summer internship is designed to complement your journalism class experiences and your work on your high school newspaper. The internships can involve reporting, photography, page design, ad design, or advertising sales.

Eligibility: If the publisher/editor agrees to participate in the CPA Foundation program, he or she must provide a letter of agreement for you to submit with your application. The agreement is required to ensure that you and the newspaper enjoy a successful internship.

How to Apply: Submit the following items in one packet to The Denver Foundation:
1. Short cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in an internship (be sure to include your name, full address, phone number, email address, and the name of your high school in your cover letter)
2. Letter of agreement from newspaper publisher/editor
3. One letter of reference, preferably from your newspaper advisor or a journalism teacher
4. Clips or samples of your work (do not send originals).
Please arrange your pages in the order above and do not use staples or binders other than paper clips. All pages, including clips, should be printed one-sided and submitted on 8 ½ x 11” paper. RBC Wealth Management Colorado Science And Engineering Scholarships 2009

Introduction: The RBC Wealth Management Colorado Scholarship Fund was founded in 2003. The goal of this fund is to provide scholarships for post-secondary education to outstanding Colorado high school seniors. This scholarship is intended to reward students for exceptional achievement, above and beyond their peers. Five $3,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2009 to students intending to pursue a degree in science, mathematics, or engineering.RBC Wealth Management is the nation’s seventh largest full-service securities firm with 1,800 financial consultants and 6,000 employees. Eligibility: 1. This scholarship is open to students graduating from a Colorado high school in the spring of 2009 who intend to pursue a science, mathematics, or engineering degree.
2. Applicants must have at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (weighted or unweighted) at the time the application is submitted.
3. Applicants must have completed, or be enrolled in, college preparatory coursework relevant to the field of study that they wish to pursue.
4. Applicants must have received an acceptance letter from an accredited college or university.
5. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
6. Students that have a parent, step-parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle who is employed by RBC Dain Rauscher are not eligible for this scholarship.

If you have a recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can fill the application out on your computer, save it, and then print it out. You can also print the application out and fill it in by hand.

The Columbine Memorial Scholarships 2009

Introduction: The Columbine Memorial Scholarship Fund, founded by the Rocky Mountain News and The Jefferson Foundation, was created through contributions from individuals, families, and businesses in response to the events at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. The scholarship fund recognizes the 12 students and one teacher who were victims of the Columbine tragedy. The fund carries on their legacy and will be awarded to those who best exemplify the qualities and characteristics of these fine individuals who will be forever remembered.

Eligibility: Applicants must:
1.Be a graduating senior from Columbine High School or a high school in the Jefferson County School District
2.Have at least a 2.5 grade point average (unweighted) at the time the application is submitted
3.Have been accepted at an accredited four-year university or college, community college, or technical school

Raymond and Velma Merkle Scholarships 2009

Introduction: Velma and Raymond Merkle were both raised and spent their lives in Colorado. Knowing their commitment to each other and being thankful for the education they received during trying times for our Country, motivated Velma to establishment this Scholarship. Though they never had children of their own, it was Velma’s hope that this fund would help a few high school seniors each year, to pay for some of their higher education expenses.

Eligibility: Applicants must be:
1.Be graduating from Littleton High School in May of 2009.
2.Have been accepted into a trade school, a technical school, a community college, or a 4-year college. The school must be in Colorado.
3.Be in need of financial help, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and be active in their school or community.
4.Be a first generation college student (i.e. a student whose parents and grandparents did not graduate from college, a student with siblings who are in college or who have graduated from college are eligible for this scholarship)

How to Apply: Return the completed application form and your answers to the essay questions to Penny Hanson at Littleton High School. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Judge Donald E. Cordova Scholarships 2009

Introduction: Donald Cordova was serving the final year of his term as a federal bankruptcy judge when he died at age 65.Prior to becoming a judge, he was an attorney who operated his own private practice. His accomplishments were many in his short lifetime, and he often credited his education as the main reason for his success. Born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado, he was the middle child in a family of 9 children. He did not come from an affluent family, yet he managed to help put himself through college and law school, mostly working odd jobs to pay tuition and make ends meet. He recalled those years as tough ones, and admitted that he almost gave up a few times because money was so tight. But he persevered and finished his schooling in order to realize his career goals. Judge Cordova came to view education as the great equalizer, or an opportunity for people from humble beginnings, such as he was, to bootstrap their way up in society, or to “break the cycle.”

Eligibility: Applicants must:
1.Be a Latino or Latina high school senior graduating from a Las Animas or Huerfano County high school.
2.Have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
3.Have financial need.
4.Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
5.Have been accepted at an accredited two or four year college or university, anywhere in the U.S.

How to Apply: Please see the Application Instructions and Checklist on page two. The Selection Committee will look at an applicant’s academic achievement, extracurricular activities, commitment to the community, financial need, and passion. Applications must be postmarked by April 17, 2009. A letter will be mailed to all applicants about the Committee’s decisions on or before May 19, 2009.

Introduction: The Dave Sanders Memorial Scholarship was established by the Colorado Masons on April 23, 1999, in honor and memory of Columbine High School business teacher and coach, Dave Sanders.Contributions for the scholarship fund were received from around the world from over 3,000 individuals and companies in 36 States and the District of Columbia as well as Canada, Italy, Mexico, Scotland, Spain, and Tasmania. Some of the larger contributors include Lucas Film, Ltd., Disneyland, the Columbine High School coaches, the Colorado Chapter of the Association of Walls and Ceiling Industries, Acoustical Concepts, Inc, and the Northern Colorado Beanie Baby Club of Fort Collins. The program is now administered by The Denver Foundation.

Eligibility: Applicants must:
1.Be a senior graduating from Columbine High School
2.Be planning to attend college or another accredited post high school educational institution in the fall of 2009
3.Have a minimum cumulative GPA through 7 semesters of 2.5
4.Have attended Columbine High School for a minimum of 2 years

How to Apply: Applications must be turned in to the Columbine High School Counseling Office by Friday, April 10, 2009. A letter will be mailed to all applicants regarding the Selection Committee’s decisions no later than April 29, 2009. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to a recipient’s educational institution and must be used within one year of the award date. Each scholarship award is a one-time award and is not renewable.

Denver Country Club Scholarships 2009

The Denver Country Club Scholarships 2009

Introduction: The Denver Country Club Scholarship Program provides scholarship assistance to Colorado residents who have a work record with The Denver Country Club. Established by club members in 1975, scholarships were originally given to members of the Caddy Program, but the program is now open to all club employees. Scholarship awards are generally between $1,000 and $5,000 per recipient. Some awards may be renewable

Eligibility: Applicants must:
1.Have worked for The Denver Country Club for at least one full year by the application deadline or at least one season as a seasonal employee and be planning to return for a second season.
2.Be a legal Colorado resident.
3.Be planning to attend an accredited college or university for the 2009/2010 academic year to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree (full-time or part-time).
4.Have financial need

How to Apply: To apply, deliver both of the following to Cheryl Pas in The Denver Country Club Human Resources Department, 1700 East 1st Avenue, Denver, CO 80218, by April 15, 2009:
1.A completed application form, including a Personal Statement. Feel free to include a resume or up to three extra sheets if needed, but be sure to fill in all areas of the application form. Application reviewers read a large number of applications and must be able to quickly find the information they need to compare applicants. For this reason, do not write “see resume” in any of the blanks.
2.Transcript of Grades If you are a high school senior, submit a copy of your high school transcript and a copy of your SAT/ACT scores. If you are a college freshman, submit a copy of your high school transcript and the transcript from your first semester in college. Current college students who have sophomore standing or above should submit their current college transcript (or transcripts if you have attended more than one school). Unofficial or downloaded transcripts are acceptable. You may be asked to provide official transcripts if you are selected for an award.

CTU Denver - Robotics Scholarships 2009

Scholarship Name: CTU Denver/FIRST Robotics Scholarship Program

Introduction: CTU Denver/FIRST Robotics Scholarship Program. This program will assist FIRST Robotics or FIRST Technical Challenge team members who plan to continue their education beyond high school. Scholarships are offered for full-time,undergraduate study at either of Denver’s accredited Campuses.This scholarship program is administered by the Colorado Technical University’s Denver Campuses.

Eligibility: Applicants to the CTU Denver/FIRST Robotics Scholarship Program must be –

Students who have participated at least one year on a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) or FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) team in high school.

High school seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study (at least 12 credit hours per quarter, or 8 credit hours in a mini-term).

Students must plan to attend at least three of the four quarters for a twelve month Period.

How to Apply: Interested students must complete the CTU Denver/FIRST Robotics ScholarshipApplication.

The applicants must prepare and attach an essay, not to exceed 500 words, on the following topics:

1. “COMPLETING MY EDUCATION WILL ALLOW ME TO ACHIEVE MY DREAM OF ……”
2. DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE ON YOUR FIRST TEAM AS WELL AS WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCE.

The student must obtain a Letter of Recommendation from a current or prior FIRST team mentor or adult sponsor and attach it to the Scholarship Application

Important dates: The application package must be postmarked or hand delivered to the, CTU DenverFinancial Aid Office prior to the application deadline (June 20th 2009).
